Once again the siren song of the upcoming summer movie season is working its magic on me. It’s the stellar marketing for Prometheus – the cool/creepy android video and the 2023 TED talk video – that have done it. (By the way, can I just say how excited I am that Guy Pearce is back in films. So hot. So talented. Such a great master of the universe voice in that TED video).
But, in the case of Prometheus, I’m definitely worried that the movie won’t live up to the hype. Ridley Scott has not exactly been on top of his game lately and this could end up being a lame retread of his past work.
On the other hand, I’m pretty sure that The Avengers is going to be both awesome and massive. The first moment I realized it was going to be a huge smash was when I took my 7 year old twin niece and nephew to see John Carter (yes, I was one of the 5 people who saw John Carter) and the preview played before the movie. I thought for sure that my nephew would be stoked, but it was actually my super-girly-pink-wearing niece who said, “I want to see that. The Avengers. I want to see The Avengers.” over and over after watching the trailer. I’m just super pumped that Joss Whedon has finally gotten the chance to make a big summer action flick. I’ve loved him since Buffy and Firefly and having someone make a movie who understands that plot is as important as explosions is exciting. Plus, Robert Downey Jr.
There’s what seems to be a lot of cool stuff on the way this summer; however, I thought that last summer too and ended up being disappointed by EVERYTHING. But The Hunger Games has restored my faith that good movies can be made by the studio system, so I’m cautiously optimistic for:
- The Avengers
- The Dark Knight Rises
- Men in Black III
- Snow White and the Huntsman
- Dark Shadows
- Rock of Ages
- Bourne Legacy
- Magic Mike
I just realized The Avengers opens the same day as my daughter’s first birthday. Too early to take her? Just kidding.
